The Aljunied district is set to hog the limelight as the opposition party, WP (Workers’ Party) takes over the running and the operations of the Ajunied Town Council formally. The opposition party won the recent elections for this district and will be running the council from PAP (People’s Action Party) starting August. Many are anticipating how it will change with the merger of Aljunied with Hougang which is also won by WP which the party claim to take advantage of economies of scale. The combined town council is chaired by Sylvia Lim, the WP Chairman and the MP of Aljunied GRC.

WP won the Aljunied seat in the recent May 7 general election and it will be the focus of many on whether they are able to do a better job as compared to the ruling party. According to the WP, they will ensure continuity and maintenance of the current contracts governing services like rubbish disposal and the cleaning and maintenance of the estates. The ‘new’ team had also on July 15 sent a letter to the households in Aljunied that there will be no changes to the service and conservancy charges which is from S$28 to S$66 per month.

Wang Peng Fei, a 24 year old China student in a local Singaporean school was propelled into the spotlight recently when he made fun of Singaporeans through a video he uploaded on the internet. He was studying in his final year at the East Asia institute of Management and his expression of creativity caused him to be expelled from the school where he is enrolled in the hospitality course there.

In the video, which was deemed ‘racist’ was four minutes long and was made in Mandarin. He was expelled on the grounds of ‘gross misconduct’ by the East Asia Institute of Management despite apologizing on his blog after that. The act is considered to have violated a clause in his visa contract which means that apart from being revoked, it would also mean that he will not get his S$10,000 course fee for the year.

Since the case took flight, members of the public have come out to condemn his acts where a member of a political party even made a police report against Wang. Alex Tan Zhi-Xiang of the Singapore People’s Party lodged the police report against Wang for his ‘racist remarks’ against a minority group which might not amount to anything as Wang is believed to have returned to his home in China.

It seems that the Education Ministry of Singapore is looking to nurture more students for the love of art and culture apart from preparing them for the workforce. According to Heng Swee Keat, the Minister of Education, they are putting in efforts to groom students to become more creative, expressive and imaginative with their new initiative in launching the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts or known in short as STAR. The education system of Singapore is known to be highly competitive and students usually are trained and taught a wide range of skills and academic knowledge but the need for more creative thinkers and innovative knowledge have become more important in recent years.

He said that the academy would provide professional development opportunities for art and music teachers for teachers in the art and music areas. He also said that in doing so, the ministry will provide more of such opportunities for teachers by raising the level of art and music education in the Singaporean schools. This is where the new academy comes into play where music teachers are able to share their expertise and look at ways to improve the students’ learning experiences. In doing so, students will be able to grasp more skills and creative technique to equip them before they go out to the industry.

In the past, the market vendors along Sungei Road were able to sell their products in a bigger space than the 1 square meter allocated to them. This regulations has been in practice since 1982 but as they previously have more space to work with, they could enjoy the luxury of having more things to sell. But this is no longer the case after the flea market area’s land has been ‘taken back’ to make way for a construction of a new MRT station there.

Hence, they now have to make do with the space as per the regulations as the construction of the Sungei Road MRT station is set to start and those who used to market their wares around Pasar Lane, Pitt Street and Larut Road would be affected. In fact, Pasar Lane and half of Pitt Street have now been condoned off and vendors who used to spot their locations there will no longer be able to operate there. Hence, they now have a situation where vendors are arriving as early as spaces are allocated on first come first served basis and the small space there would not be able to cater to the more than 300 vendors who used to operate their business there.

An unusual sight reported recently when heavy and intense rain in central and eastern Singapore last Sunday caused flash floods in certain place. But it was the flooding in Orchard Road, the premier shopping spot that caused much concern. According to PUB, the national water agency of Singapore, the rain that fell measured up to 65mm in 30 minutes which was way more intense than June last year when floods also occurred. Last June 16, 2 hours of rain recorded 100mm.

Flash floods were also reported at around Blackmore to Maplewood Road in Bukit Timah.
While the flood was not as bad as last years, pictures of luxury cars like BMWs, Ferraris and such submerged in water in a parking lot in Orchard Road raised some eyebrows around. There were also flash floods recorded around Cuscaden Road, Tanglin/Tomlinson Road junction, and Napier Road/Tanglin Road junction as well as the Delfi Orchard basement carpark. The basement 1 level of Tanglin Mall which was also flooded for the first time while some outlets in Forum shopping Mall had to be closed to ‘chase out’ the water. Tankers were deployed to the 2 malls to pump and channel the water out so that business could resume as soon as possible.

One of the major newspapers in Singapore, The New Paper is set to hold the first School Sports Star Award where it is meant to recognize sports boys and girls around the country for their remarkable achievements in their various competitions. The key focus of the awards is to reward the students’ contributions to their respective schools in their competitions either in the local, regional or international levels.

Known in short as the TNP triple S Award, it is meant not only for the sports achievements but more so on what the student has done for the school. If the student has any other awards or setting new national records, it would be regarded as bonus because that would not be the main or primary criteria. The paper is currently calling for nominations from anyone so it can be your friend, brother, classmates or a leader in the school. Anyone in the school can nominate candidates for their achievements.

The winners of the award would also win some very attractive prizes from the National Sports Associations who might be recommending their students for this award. A panel from the TNP, together with readers of the paper will then shortlist 5 boys and 5 girls from the final vote.

Sim Lian Group recently announced that they are reducing the prices of their flats under their Design, Build and Sell Scheme project. They announced that the prices of their 5 room Centrale 8 flats would be reduced by S$102,000 which caused many to questioned if the company are over-profiteering from the project.

When the flats were launched, they were selling it at S$880,000 and it came under fire for trying to sell the most expensive new HDB flats at Tampines Central. The ability to slash the price by more than 100k meant that they did actually try to earn too much initially. Although it was not meant for bookings, Sim Lian Group said that the $880k figure served merely as an ‘indication’ of what would be the finalized price when they start taking orders.

Looking as if trying to amend a mistake, many are doubtful that Sim Lian was actually using the $880k price as an indication but was trying to profit from a public housing project which many believe is totally unacceptable. After the price slash, the units are will now be sold between $685,000 to $778,000 which Sim Lian said is the ‘confirmed price range’ for the 178 unit project.

The Tanjong Pagar train station in Singapore recently ceased operations after many years of service connecting passengers from Malaysia to Singapore and vice-versa. After serving millions of passengers, it is time to call it a day for the station. Mohd Ayub Embong, the station operations manager was almost like a ‘celebrity’ on June 30 around 12 midnight when he was finalizing the documentation of the last train that left the station forever.

Visitors, fans and any other related people wanted to take pictures with him on the pre-war train station building. Singaporeans and Malaysians alike were at the station as the last train left and they were snapping off with their cameras as there will no longer be any trains coming into the station. Some thanked him for his service to the people, shaking hands and even giving him a big hug. Ayub said that it was a historical moment as well as a sad one but it must make way for a new complex in Woodlands. The station has been operating for 79 years. A senior KTMB official was at the station to sign off any documents for the last time and as the date turned 1 July, the Tanjong Pagar’s shutters came down for the last time.
