Aljunied takes center-stage as opposition rep takes over
The Aljunied district is set to hog the limelight as the opposition party, WP (Workers’ Party) takes over the running and the operations of the Ajunied Town Council formally. The opposition party won the recent elections for this district and will be running the council from PAP (People’s Action Party) starting August. Many are anticipating how it will change with the merger of Aljunied with Hougang which is also won by WP which the party claim to take advantage of economies of scale. The combined town council is chaired by Sylvia Lim, the WP Chairman and the MP of Aljunied GRC.
WP won the Aljunied seat in the recent May 7 general election and it will be the focus of many on whether they are able to do a better job as compared to the ruling party. According to the WP, they will ensure continuity and maintenance of the current contracts governing services like rubbish disposal and the cleaning and maintenance of the estates. The ‘new’ team had also on July 15 sent a letter to the households in Aljunied that there will be no changes to the service and conservancy charges which is from S$28 to S$66 per month.
