300 market vendors of Sungei Road fighting for business space

In the past, the market vendors along Sungei Road were able to sell their products in a bigger space than the 1 square meter allocated to them. This regulations has been in practice since 1982 but as they previously have more space to work with, they could enjoy the luxury of having more things to sell. But this is no longer the case after the flea market area’s land has been ‘taken back’ to make way for a construction of a new MRT station there.

Hence, they now have to make do with the space as per the regulations as the construction of the Sungei Road MRT station is set to start and those who used to market their wares around Pasar Lane, Pitt Street and Larut Road would be affected. In fact, Pasar Lane and half of Pitt Street have now been condoned off and vendors who used to spot their locations there will no longer be able to operate there. Hence, they now have a situation where vendors are arriving as early as spaces are allocated on first come first served basis and the small space there would not be able to cater to the more than 300 vendors who used to operate their business there.
